Head Coach bios:
14U Major - 2006 AA Head Coach – Ron Pagan. Ron began playing mite hockey at the age of six out of the Kent State arena in Kent, Ohio. He began travel hockey in the CSHL at the age of nine and continued through high school, mostly with the Tri-County All Stars out of Kent and the also played in the Detroit area with the Northeast Ohio Red Wings. For over 20 years, Ron has served as a head and assistant coach at all levels of hockey from U6 through the ACHA (collegiate club level). Ron will focus on creating a fun and educational program meant to give his players a solid knowledge-base and skill set to help them further their hockey careers.
14U Minor - 2007 AA Head Coach – Rich Smith. Rich is a Level 3 USA Hockey certified coach. He grew up in New Jersey where his hockey career began, later moving to Columbus in middle school. He played for the Columbus Capital Program through high school. He started coaching and teaching in 1999 for Hilliard High School until 2006. He has been involved with the CAHA program from 2015 to current, working with multiple levels. Rich is a high-energy hockey coach with over 35 years in the sport through coaching, playing, and refereeing. Rich is aiming to inspire athletes through his comprehensive background and experience in order to grow the program and develop players to feed the high schools.
U14 Bantam A Head Coach - Kris Bruestle. Kris is a Level 4 USA Hockey Certified Coach. He grew up playing hockey in Cincinnati, OH where he played travel and high school hockey and continued his playing career for the University of Idaho club hockey team in college. Kris started coaching while in college for the University of Idaho woman’s club team and with the local youth organization. Kris continues to play men’s league hockey in Columbus and has over 10 years coaching experience at multiple levels. Coaching philosophy: Kris strives to provide a safe and fun learning environment focusing on individual skill development and team play. Kris believes the coach’s primary role is to help each individual player prepare to move on to the next level of hockey.
12U Major - 2008 AA Head Coach – Scott Decker. Scott Decker has been an Assistant Coach for the 07AA Columbus Capitals for 3 seasons. He also previously was an assistant coach at the Bantam travel team for 2 seasons (2008-2010) for the Kalamazoo Optimist Hockey Association (KOHA). Scott grew up playing travel hockey for Plymouth Canton Youth Hockey Association and played 2 seasons for Canton (Michigan) High School Varsity Hockey. Scott's coaching philosophy centers around communication with players, explaining the "why," and focusing on fundamentals and team concepts.
12 U Minor - 2009 AA Head Coach - Steve Ott. Steve is a Level 4 USA Hockey certified coach. He grew up playing travel hockey in the Toledo area, winning Tier II Pee Wee national and midget International Silver Stick titles. Following two years of high school hockey at Sylvania Northview, Steve walked-on and played two seasons at Ohio State (CCHA). He has coached with CAHA in each of the past seven seasons (mite house, squirt house/select head coach, pee wee and bantam Capitals AA asst. coach). He also spent three seasons as head coach of the Gahanna HS club team in its early years, his first stint with team coaching. Steve is a strong advocate of the player development path provided by the CAHA organization and looks forward to working with a new group in the upcoming season.
12U Pee Wee A Head Coach – Josh Sockrider. Josh Sockrider is a Level 3 coach. He has coached a variety of levels: Head Coach for Bowling Green High School JV, Head Coach for Thomas Worthington High School Varsity, Assistant Coach at Thomas Worthington Varsity. He has been coaching for over 20 years from high school to mite. Josh grew up in Bowling Green, Ohio playing travel hockey in the Little Caesars Travel Hockey League as a goalie. In high school, his team was Ohio High School State runner-up. He played one season of D1 college hockey with BGSU. His coaching philosophy is to create a positive environment for kids to develop their hockey skills and help them learn to work harder for their teammates than themselves. He focuses on development and also ensuring the kids have fun.
10U Major - 2010 AA Heach Coach - Jim Jeans. Jim and his family have been with CAHA for 5 years. He has lived hockey professionally as an equipment manager for 21 years. He worked for 8 years in professional hockey and for13 years was with Ohio State athletics. While at Ohio State, he worked with USA Hockey, including the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. He has coached house hockey and was an assistant coach for the Bantam select team. He has coached baseball for 10 years at the travel and middle school levels. His coaching goals are to ensure the kids have fun and fall in love with and stay in love with the game of hockey. Skill development is crucial at the squirt minor age group with the transition to full ice and that will be a focus throughout the season. He also believes in kids playing multiple sports and he uses other sports to help explain the concepts of hockey.
10U Minor - 2011 AA Head Coach - Dan Cousineau. Dan is a Level 4 Coach and the Travel Director at CAHA. Dan played 4 years Varsity Hockey at Ohio State and graduated with a degree in marketing. He played minor-pro hockey for 5 years after graduation. He has extensive coaching experience: 2 years as U18 CAHA Head Coach, 6 years as Head Coach for the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets Bantam Major, 3 years as a Skating Coach for Ohio AAA Blue Jackets, 5 years as Head Coach Ohio AAA Blue Jackets Squirt Major team and 3 years as a Mini-Mite/Mite Coach at CAHA. Dan’s coaching philosophy is for the kids to work hard and have fun. He strictly follows the USA ADM with focus on the long development of the individual hockey player and not immediate results. At the Mite level, the players need to enjoy their time on the ice and be allowed to problem solve on their own without over-coaching. Work Hard, Have Fun!
10U Squirt A Head Coach – David Mackey. Dave is a Level 3 USA Hockey certified coach. He began playing hockey as an adult, but has been an avid participant for the last 25 years. He has coached within the CAHA organization for house and select teams at the mite and squirt levels and for the AA Capitals at the Pee Wee and Bantam levels. Dave is a proponent of the USA Hockey American Developmental Model, including emphasis on skill development and small area games, and excited to work with a new team this season.
