Head Coach bios:
14U Major - 2007 AA Head Coach – Rich Smith. Rich is a Level 3 USA Hockey certified coach. He grew up in New Jersey where his hockey career began, later moving to Columbus in middle school. He played for the Columbus Capital Program through high school. He started coaching and teaching in 1999 for Hilliard High School until 2006. He has been involved with the CAHA program from 2015 to current, working with multiple levels. Rich is a high-energy hockey coach with over 35 years in the sport through coaching, playing, and refereeing. Rich is aiming to inspire athletes through his comprehensive background and experience in order to grow the program and develop players to feed the high schools.
14U Minor - 2008 AA Head Coach - Jeff Martin. Jeff is a Level 4 USA Hockey certified coach. Jeff has several years of experience coaching at a variety of levels. Most recently, he was an Assistant Coach for the Columbus Capitals 2008AA team. He has experience coaching at the Mite, Squirt, Pee Wee, Bantam, Midget/High School JV and college club levels. He has coached house and travel, as well as been a program administrator for a squirt travel program. He has coached in Columbus, Newark and at OSU-Newark. Jeff is a coach who focuses on developing the skills of hockey players on and off the ice. He focuses on making sure players develop their individual skills, learn to work together as a team and develop an understanding of the game of hockey.
U14 Bantam A Head Coach – Zach Vallette/Scott Decker. Zach grew up playing hockey in Columbus and played for both Dublin Scioto High School and Team Columbus pre/post team. Zach is a Level 4 USA Hockey certified coach and has coaching experience at a variety of levels - Dublin Scioto High School, Team Columbus pre/post, and the Columbus Capitals. Scott grew up playing hockey in the Canton, Michigan area and is a Level 4 USA Hockey certified coach who has played at a variety of levels including the travel and high school levels. He has been a head coach for the Columbus Capitals and has several years as an assistant with travel and select teams at CAHA. Both Coach Vallette and Coach Decker focus on the fundamentals of hockey while also ensuring that kids have fun, are good teammates and develop a love of the game.
12 U Major - 2009 AA Head Coach - Steve Ott. Steve is a Level 4 USA Hockey certified coach. He grew up playing travel hockey in the Toledo area, winning Tier II Pee Wee national and midget International Silver Stick titles. Following two years of high school hockey at Sylvania Northview, Steve walked-on and played two seasons at Ohio State (CCHA). He has coached with CAHA in each of the past seven seasons (mite house, squirt house/select head coach, pee wee and bantam Capitals AA asst. coach). He also spent three seasons as head coach of the Gahanna HS club team in its early years, his first stint with team coaching. Steve is a strong advocate of the player development path provided by the CAHA organization and looks forward to working with a new group in the upcoming season.
12U Minor - 2010 AA Head Coach - Jim Jeans. Jim and his family have been with CAHA for 7+ years. He was fortunate to have lived hockey professionally as an equipment manager for 21 years. He worked for 8 years in professional hockey and for 13 years was with Ohio State Women’s Ice Hockey. He has been with Ohio State Athletics for 16 years in total. While at Ohio State, he worked with USA Hockey, including 2 World Championships in 2008 in Harbin China and 2009 in Finland as well as the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. He has head coached house hockey and was an assistant coach for the Bantam select team in 2018-19, Head Coach of the 2009-10 A in 2019-2020 and Head Coach of the 2010 AA in 2020-2021. He has coached travel baseball for 12 years and middle school level in 2018-19. His coaching goals are to ensure the kids have fun and fall in love with or stay in love with the game of hockey. Skill development and team concept is crucial at the Pee Wee age group and will be a focus throughout the season. He also believes in kids playing multiple sports and he uses other sports to help explain different concepts within the game of hockey.
12U Pee Wee A Head Coach – Josh Sockrider. Josh Sockrider is a Level 4 coach. He has coached a variety of levels: Head Coach for Bowling Green High School JV, Head Coach for Thomas Worthington High School Varsity, Assistant Coach at Thomas Worthington Varsity. He has been coaching for over 20 years from high school to mite. Josh grew up in Bowling Green, Ohio playing travel hockey in the Little Caesars Travel Hockey League as a goalie. In high school, his team was Ohio High School State runner-up. He played one season of D1 college hockey with BGSU. His coaching philosophy is to create a positive environment for kids to develop their hockey skills and help them learn to work harder for their teammates than themselves. He focuses on development and also ensuring the kids have fun.
10U Major - 2011 AA Head Coach – TBD
10U Minor – 2012 AA Head Coach – Nick Petraglia. Nick has extensive hockey experience as a player, coach and administrator. In 2020, he was hired as the Executive Vice President for the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets after spending 20 years at Miami University in Oxford, OH.
