House Hockey Staff

Mike Betz has coached in CAHA for the past five seasons and has been coaching youth hockey at various levels for the past twenty years.

Mike played goaltender for the Ohio State Buckeyes, where he holds the all-time records for career wins, saves, shutouts, and minutes played. After his career at OSU, he played professionally for parts of two seasons in the East Coast Hockey League.

Mike earned his PhD in Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics in 2011 and is now an Associate Professor at Ohio State in the Department of Human Sciences. He lives in Worthington with his wife and three children.  

Coach Mack was grew up playing goalie in Columbus, OH starting at age 9. He began playing for CCYHA house, select and travel through Bantam Hockey. Mack then played three years with Hilliard High School Hockey Club-one year JV and two years on varsity. 

Following his junior season, Mack attended Governor’s Academy (Byfield, MA) to further his hockey career at the Prep School level. Mack was voted all-league (Independent School League, Team MVP and was an assistant captain during his time at Governor’s. Mack then went on to play four years of NCAA DIII Hockey with Colby College (Waterville, ME). Mack posted a .918 SV.% his senior season. 

After graduation, Mack went right into coaching at Gilmour Academy (Gates Mills, OH). Mack was a goaltending coach and an assistant coach with both the Gilmour 18u AAA & the 16u AAA prep programs. Mack also was a goaltending coach with Conway Goaltending School in Cleveland and led camps, clinics and private lessons. 

Since January, Mack has worked a personal trainer in Upper Arlington and been coaching goalies and players in the Columbus area. Mack runs lessons, camps, clinics and assists with the Chiller Specialized Hockey Skills program (Skate Treadmill & RapidShot). He is the current goalie coach of the Columbus Chill 18u & 16u AA teams and will be launching the Chiller Strength & Conditioning program at Chiller North coming very soon!
